Privacy Policy
The short version
- The gaanote app can't use the internet. It doesn't request Android's internet permission, so it can't send anything anywhere.
- We collect no personal data through the app. There are no accounts, servers, analytics, advertising or tracking.
- Your recordings, transcripts and voiceprints stay on your phone, encrypted with keys that only your phone and your recovery key can open.
- Data leaves your phone only when you send it, for example by sharing a clip, exporting notes or copying a backup.
- Google Play handles purchases and app downloads under Google's own privacy policy.
1. Who we are
gaanote (“the app”) is published by Aavya Dev, based in India (“we”, “us”, “our”). Aavya Dev is responsible for the app and for this website, gaanote.com.
If you have a question about privacy, email callsanty@gmail.com.
2. What this policy covers
This policy covers the gaanote Android app and the website at gaanote.com. It explains what information is handled, where it is stored, and what choices you have.
gaanote is designed so that we never receive your notes or recordings. Most of this policy describes what happens on your own phone, because that is where your data stays.
3. Data the app keeps on your phone
To work, gaanote creates and stores the following on your phone. All of it is encrypted (see Security). None of it is sent to us.
- Audio recordings of what you choose to record: notes you speak and meetings you record.
- Transcripts of those recordings, with the time of each word. Speech is recognised by models that run on your phone.
- Voiceprints. A voiceprint is a set of numbers computed from a voice so the app can tell speakers apart. Your own is made from a sentence you read aloud during setup. A voiceprint for someone else is saved only when you name their voice. See Voices and voiceprints.
- Things the app works out from your notes, such as reminders (“pins”), key lines, written summaries, which language was spoken, and whether a moment was a question, laughter or whispered. The app does not guess anyone’s age, gender, emotions, health or accent.
- Calendar details, only if you allow calendar access: the title and time of a meeting you record, used to label it.
- App records: your settings, a count of how many seconds you have recorded (for the free allowance), and whether you have bought the unlock.
- Country and language. The app reads your phone’s country and language settings to choose speech models and wording. This is not stored or sent anywhere.
4. Permissions and why
| Permission | Why gaanote asks | Required? |
|---|---|---|
| Microphone, and a recording notification | To record and transcribe when you press the button, use the widget or tile, or use a shortcut. Recording is always shown on screen and in a notification. gaanote has no hidden recording mode. | Yes |
| Notifications and alarms | To ring reminders at the time you set. Asked the first time you set one. | Optional |
| Calendar (read only) | To name a meeting from your calendar and note that it was a call. | Optional |
| Fingerprint, face or screen lock | To lock the app. Android handles the check; gaanote never sees your fingerprint or face. | Optional |
gaanote does not ask for internet or network access, location, contacts, phone or call logs, or broad storage access. Files are opened and saved only through Android’s file picker, in places you choose.
5. What we collect
Through the app, we collect no personal data. We have no accounts, no servers and no way to receive data from the app. The app contains no analytics, advertising, crash-reporting or tracking code, and it can’t connect to the internet.
We do not sell or rent personal data, and we do not use it for advertising. We have none to sell.
If you choose to send us something, such as an email or a diagnostics file you export from the app and attach, we receive what you send. A diagnostics file contains technical details about the app and your phone model, and counts of things like searches that found nothing. It does not contain your recordings or transcripts. You can open it and read it before you send it.
6. Voices and voiceprints
Voiceprints are biometric information in some places. Here is how gaanote treats them:
- A voiceprint is created only for you during setup and for people whose voices you choose to name.
- Voiceprints are used only to label who spoke, on your phone. They are never sent to us or anyone else, and they are never used for advertising or sold.
- Voiceprints are stored encrypted. They are included in your encrypted backups so a restore can recognise voices again. They are never included in plain exports or shared clips.
- You can delete any voiceprint at any time with “Forget this voice”. It is deleted permanently from the phone. Deleting the app deletes all voiceprints.
Recording other people. Laws on recording conversations and on voice data differ by country and, in the US, by state. Some places require everyone in a conversation to agree to being recorded. When you first set up gaanote, you confirm that you will tell people when you record them and when you save their voice. You are responsible for following the law where you are.
7. Google Play
gaanote is distributed through Google Play. Some things happen through Google’s systems, not ours, under the Google Privacy Policy:
- Downloads. The Play Store app downloads gaanote and its speech models to your phone.
- Purchases. If you buy the unlock, Google handles the payment and links the purchase to your Google account. We receive the reports Google gives every developer, such as order numbers, country and amount. We do not receive your card details, and we do not link purchases to your notes. The app checks your purchase with the Play Store app on your phone.
- Crash and performance reports. If you have allowed it in your phone’s settings, Android and Google Play may send Google anonymised crash and performance data, which Google shows to developers in Play Console. It does not include your notes or recordings.
8. When data leaves your phone
Data leaves your phone only when you choose to send it:
- Sharing a moment. You can share a clip of audio and its text to another app, such as WhatsApp or email. That clip is not encrypted, and the app you share to handles it under its own terms. gaanote warns you the first time, and asks again for whispered moments.
- Exporting. You can export your notes as text, subtitles, audio or calendar files. Exports are not encrypted, and gaanote warns you before it makes one.
- Backups. gaanote saves encrypted backups to a folder you choose, such as phone storage, an SD card or a USB drive. If you copy a backup to a cloud drive, that service stores it. It can’t read the backup without your recovery key.
Android’s own cloud backup and phone-to-phone transfer are switched off for gaanote, so your data isn’t copied to Google’s backup service.
9. Security
- Your notes, audio and voiceprints are encrypted on the phone with AES-256. The key is protected by Android’s hardware-backed keystore.
- During setup you get a recovery key. It is the only other way to open your data, for example to restore a backup on a new phone. We don’t have a copy, and we can’t recover your data if you lose both your phone and your recovery key.
- You can lock the app with your fingerprint, face or screen lock. The app hides its contents in the recent apps view.
No system is perfectly secure. Protect your phone with a screen lock, and keep your recovery key somewhere safe, such as a password manager.
10. Keeping and deleting data
Your data stays on your phone until you delete it. You can:
- Delete any note, recording or meeting in the app.
- Choose to keep the text but delete audio older than a number of days you set.
- Forget any voice, which permanently deletes its voiceprint.
- Delete everything by clearing the app’s storage in Android Settings, or by uninstalling gaanote.
Backups and exports you saved elsewhere are not deleted when you uninstall. Delete those files yourself if you want them gone.
Because we hold no data from the app and there are no accounts, there is nothing for us to delete on our side. If you emailed us, you can ask us to delete those emails. See This website and emails.
11. Your rights
Depending on where you live, you may have the right to access, correct, delete or move your personal data, to withdraw consent, and to complain to a regulator. This includes rights under India’s Digital Personal Data Protection Act, 2023, and US state privacy laws such as the California Consumer Privacy Act.
In gaanote, you can use these rights directly in the app: everything is on your phone, and you can read, correct, export and delete it. For anything we hold, such as emails you sent us, contact us at callsanty@gmail.com. We reply within 30 days. We won’t treat you differently for using your rights.
California residents: we do not sell or share personal information, as those terms are defined in California law, and we have not done so in the past 12 months.
12. Children
gaanote is not designed for children. It is not directed at children under 13, and in India, a person under 18 should use it only with a parent or guardian’s permission. Because the app collects no personal data, we don’t knowingly collect personal data from children. If you think a child has sent us personal data by email, contact us and we will delete it.
13. This website and emails
gaanote.com is a static website. It uses no cookies, analytics, advertising or tracking, and it loads nothing from other websites.
The site is hosted by Cloudflare. Like any web host, Cloudflare processes technical data, such as your IP address and browser type, to deliver the pages and protect the site from attacks. This is handled under Cloudflare’s privacy policy. We don’t use this data to identify you.
If you email us, for example to ask to be told about the launch, we use your email address and message only to reply and, if you asked, to send you one launch announcement. Our email is provided by Google (Gmail). We keep launch requests until we have sent the announcement, then delete them. We keep other emails only as long as needed to help you. Ask us at any time to delete your emails.
14. Google Play data safety summary
This is what we declare in the Data safety section of our Google Play listing:
| Question | Answer |
|---|---|
| Data collected by the developer | None. Data is processed only on the phone and is never sent to us. |
| Data shared with third parties | None. Sharing happens only when you choose to send something to another app. |
| Data encrypted | Yes, on the phone. The app makes no network connections. |
| You can ask for data to be deleted | You can delete it yourself in the app, or by clearing its storage or uninstalling. There is no account to delete. |
15. Changes to this policy
If we change this policy, we will post the new version here and update the date at the top. If a change affects how your data is handled, we will tell you in the app before it takes effect. We will never add data collection to the app without asking you first.
16. Contact and grievance officer
For questions, requests or complaints about privacy, contact:
Aavya Dev, Grievance Officer for gaanote
Email: callsanty@gmail.com
We acknowledge complaints within 48 hours and aim to resolve them within 30 days. If you are in India and not satisfied with our response, you can complain to the Data Protection Board of India.
